Florida Highway Patrol

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) currently operates a mix of 3 systems: 1) Original VHF Highband System, 2) Statewide DIGITAL APCO-25 Motorola Astro System, 3) Use of local 800MHz systems for their communciations needs.

Starting in June 2002 a fourth NEW system will begin to be brought online in Jacksonville, Tampa, and Ft. Myers. This will be a Com-Net/Ericsson/GE EDACS DIGITAL ProVoice (NON APCO P-25/AMBE Vocoder) system. UNMONITORABLE with the Uniden BC250D/785D & BCi25 digital scanner & card. System is 100% DES ENCRYPTED ALL TALKGROUPS and CONTORL CHANNEL (ESK). This system will be built out in the areas which presently do not have the Motorola 800 system. Once these areas are completed the areas with the Motorola system will be switched to the Com-Net EDACS system. Expected completion for this 2005.

Some FHP Dispatch centers and cars have both the VHF and/or the 800MHz system for the area in the consoles/cars. Some areas have only the 800 or VHF system they use. Most of the areas with 800 either local or state have turned OFF the bases and mobiles on the VHF, although the equipment remains in both.
