TWO (2) IRC chat channels or rooms have been set up to discuss radio scanners in the Tampa Bay region.

Just like the Yahoo lists these are divided into some what north and south division so as to not get too intense on areas that are way out of range for some.

#tampabayscan - Will cover the counties of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Polk, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, Sutmer & Lake.

#manasotascan - Will cover the counties of Manatee, Sarasota, Hardee, DeSoto, Charlotte, Lee, Collier,Glades, Hendry & Highlands.

Its fine if a little bit of "creep" occurs into adjoining counties, just don't want to discuss Citrus county when no one from the south counties like Manatee etc. can hear Citrus counties TRS.

Any thing thats related to radio reception, monitoring, decoding, etc. via a scanner is welcome. If theres interest I will setup a night to specifically have a chat like SUN at 8PM or something like that.

What do you need to access these channels?

You need a IRC client that SUPPORTS SSL connections.

One IRC client with BUILT IN SSL support is: X-Chat, another is the IceChat Beta (It MUST be the BETA version for IceChat to get SSL support built in.)

You may be able to use plug ins or 3rd party software like stunnel, openssl etc. with other IRC clients to get them to support SSL on IRC. These two clients have it built it already.

You MUST CONNECT using an SSL connection to the IRC server or you can not access the channels.

I have chosen ZIRC Net as they provide SSL connections, from client to server and more importantly SERVER to SERVER. Unlike other IRC networks that have plain text links to interconnect their servers.

To connect:

Server: sapphire.va.us.zirc.org/7001
channel: #tampabayscan or #manasotascan

Use any of the following servers on PORT 7001:
us.zirc.org Random
avalon.az.us.zirc.org Arizona USA
chaos.ca.us.zirc.org California USA
mistral.il.us.zirc.org Illinois USA
sapphire.va.us.zirc.org Virginia USA
snowball.mo.us.zirc.org Missouri USA

You must advise your IRC client to ACCEPT self signed certificates.
