Wireless Microphones and PA Systems

Wireless microphones, intercoms & PA systems show up all over the place nowadays. It seems that ever HS band I see during football season has a wireless PA on a tripod, and the football coaches using wireless headsets of some sort. Even the referees get in on the act!

This page attempts to outline where wireless mics, PA's and intercoms may show up. It is not an end all guide to these devices, as they may show up just about anywhere.

It should be noted that TV stations have special licensing under Part 74 allowing for operation of wireless microphones in the regular TV bands of 174-216, & 470-806MHz on secondary non interfering basis to TV operations. Also applies to persons eligilble under Part 90 for Film & Video Production Companies. This does not preclude the use of any of the below frequencies.

Wireless mics can operate on several bands including the Part 15 49MHz & 928MHz license free bands. These areas will contain mostly consumer type systems, but anybody could show up here. Other common frequencies are outllined in the table below. The channel designators are from some systems which are used in the broadcast industry and are synthesizied to operate on any of the channels listed. Most of these systems have an LED/LCD readout showing the channel number. These systems may also use a proprietaty number system too.
